Summer Milky Way Arch and Orion over Mt Taranaki (+ Air Glow and Aurora)

from NZ$100.00

Summer Milky Way Arch and Orion over Mt Taranaki (+ Air Glow and Aurora)

Note: This is the A4 / A3 / A2 crop version. (There is also a 3:1 wide pano version).

Taken: Tues Dec 27th at 1am approx.

Story: After nearly a month of waiting for clear skies the conditions finally came right for astrophotography. The moon was setting just before midnight and I knew that the Milky Way would be rising and creating a perfect arch from this particular location on the West side of the mountain facing East with Orion in the frame too. I had to abandon plan A to use my normal filter due to how high the arch of the Milky Way was, and after a few false starts and technical problems I finally got going with shooting the sky and settled on a shorter shutter speed to try and get the whole arch and everything in the frame that I wanted. To top it all off I even managed to get my first ever auroral beams (pink beams to right side of wide angle image). It was an amazing night with hardly any wind and apart from the odd cow noises it was really quiet and peaceful. It was great too that 2 of my friends could join me for some of the night - they got to see a huge meteor streaking across the sky that I missed but they left before the Aurora hit around 2am.

Highlights in this image left to right: Orion, Rosette Nebula, Sirius, Gum Nebula, Canopus, Large Magellanic Cloud.
