Stony River Summer Milky Way Arch

from NZ$100.00

Stony River Summer Milky Way Arch

Taken: Saturday 9th Dec at 1am approx.

Story: I feel like I pulled off the impossible shot with this image - there were so many challenges and obstacles to getting it along the way. For starters I'd never seen anyone else shoot a shot like this from this location so far north around the mountain, so I wasn't even sure if it was possible. Once I actually got to the river I had to find a spot that would work for a wide-angle foreground pano shot. I got there well before sunset and spent over an hour wandering up and down the river searching for a good place before I eventually found this spot that I ended up using - which to get to I had to rock hop over multiple rocks being careful not to fall into the river with all of my gear too.

The sky took several hours to shoot and is a tracked panorama of 59 shots. Using the nebula filter really helped to bring out the detail of the red nebulae around Orion and the massive circular Gum nebula in the middle of the image.

In the end it was worth staying up shooting until 2am to make the most of the fine weather and moonless night to get this shot.
