Taranaki Milky Way Arch

Taken: Saturday 10th June 2023

Story: I spent over 4 hours and shot 140 photos for this image. It's my largest image so far and my first full Milky Way arch image that was shot including my special filter that picks up the faint red nebulae. In particular in this image it's brought out the Gum Nebula (circular nebula on the far right), and the Rho Ophiuchi and Zeta Ophiuchi Nebulae (reddish colours at the top of the image). It's also the best I've ever managed to capture the Blue Horsehead nebula (top of image). I was lucky to be able to get this image done before midnight when the moon was due to rise and in the end I got it finished with about 2 minutes to spare before the moon ruined the darkness and sky clarity.

One funny thing that happened on this particular night was that when I first went up the track (which is a public walkway that happens to run through farmland) to where I had planned to shoot from I quickly realised that I was not alone - about a dozen cows were in the same field as me! I decided that the possibility of being accosted by cows wasn't worth the risk so relocated further down the track on the other side of the fence from the cows.
