Galactic Kiwi Dreams (Milky Way Setting over Mt Taranaki)

19 shot blended composite

Story: I was booked in to do a snow course up the mountain on that weekend so when I saw that the forecast was for fine clear skies on the Friday night I decided to head up the night before the course started to do some astrophotography from near Tahurangi Lodge.

I'm calling this a composite because while the Milky Way was in that position I had to move the tripod about 10 metres to the right to get the foreground shots later in the night after the moon had risen. I had tried setting up the tracker at the same location as I ended up shooting the foreground but the ground was too steep and unstable to set up the tracker due to the snow and soft ground.

I'm glad that this image ended up working out because I had a lot of challenges in the process of shooting it. Getting heavy astrophotography gear up the mountain was one challenge, but then during the actual shooting I had problems with the snow and ice and getting set up. At one point I thought it was some of my photography gear that I'd dropped and saw flying down the mountain side, but later I realised that it was just a cheap water bottle. I'll probably find it next summer after the snow thaws.
